The term social security causes spasms in most people.  You'll hear everything negative and positive about them.  So let's just deal with what it is and what it isn't.  The Social Security Administration is a blanket term for the organization that oversees Medicare, disability, SSI, and also handle retirement issues and survivors.  According to their website: We pay retirement, disability and survivors benefits to workers and their families and administer the Supplemental Security Income program. We also issue Social Security numbers.
